Parents Introduction

Can you remember doing your Cycling Proficiency mums and dads?

Well, Bikeability is the all new cycling training scheme for the 21st century. Many adults will remember doing their Cycling Proficiency Test but Bikeability is designed to give the next generation the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today's roads. Cycling is healthy and fun but it's necessary to learn how to do it safely. This is why thousands of children will now have the chance to get their Bikeability award as part of a national scheme that is being rolled out across England.

To get their hands on a Bikeability award, children will have to take part in the Government approved National Standard for Cycle Training which has been developed by over 20 professional organisations.

There are three levels:

» Level one will offer basic bike handling skills in a controlled environment away from roads

» Level two will teach children to cycle planned routes on minor roads offering real cycling experience

» Level three will ensure cyclists are able to manage all traffic conditions

Bikeability has already been piloted in 10 areas in England with resounding success. In fact, through our research in these areas, we found that:

»
83% of training organisers and instructors said they saw an increase in the number of children cycling to school

»
67% of children said they were cycling more after taking part

» All of the teachers and parents surveyed agreed that Bikeability training is necessary for today's children

The aim of Bikeability is to encourage and inspire children to go on to achieve all three levels, recognising that there is always more to learn and to enjoy by riding a bike. Cycling England's vision is that within five years, no child should leave primary school without the opportunity to get their Bikeability training.

More children cycling, more safely and more often has huge benefits. It will lead to improved health and fitness, reduced congestion and pollution and hopefully even more Olympic champions!

As parents, our natural instinct is to protect our children from any risks and danger. Like most things in life, cycling is not risk free but fortunately serious accidents are extremely rare. Any risks associated with cycling are far outweighed by the benefits of a healthy active lifestyle. Cycling can help to combat the rising levels of childhood obesity and help establish the activity habit for later life.

Cycling also helps children develop a sense of responsibility and independence. Knowing your kids can cycle safely means that you can send them off on a bike ride during the school holidays to give you some peace and quiet!

Bikeability will equip your child with the necessary skills and knowledge needed to cycle safely throughout the rest of their life. And once they've learnt how to ride their bike and ride it safely, they will never forget.
