Becoming A Cycle Instructor
In order to deliver Bikeability cycle training and issue the Bikeability award materials, there are two key requirements:
» Your scheme must deliver courses that are lead by instructor(s) who are qualified in the National Standards for Cycle Training; and
» You must have registered your training as a Bikeability scheme.
Step by Step: National Standards for Cycle Training Qualification
Step 1 – select an Instructor Training Centre
There are a number of Instructor Training Centres (ITCs) that are licensed to issue the National Standards for Cycle Training qualification. The latest list of ITCs can be downloaded here
Step 2 – attend instructor training course
The instructor course takes four days to complete. Some ITCs allow the four days to split over a couple of weeks. The cost of the course will vary slightly between ITC, but is generally around £500. You may be eligible for a Cycling England bursary of £300 – ask your ITC about accessing the bursary.
Step 3 – provisional instructor qualification
You will be issued a provisional instructor qualification when you pass the four day course. At this point you are able to start delivering National Standard cycle training and can register your training scheme with Bikeability. If you fail the 4 day course you will be advised of your options.
Step 4 – full instructor qualification (post-course monitoring)
Within six months of gaining your provisional instructor qualification, you will need to ensure you receive a post-course assessment from your ITC. This is usually one or two observed sessions (usually teaching a group) and once you have met the post-course assessment criteria you will progress to full instructor qualification.
