Integration With Other Programmes

Cycle training schemes are most effective if they are integral to otherprogrammes involving school travel plans, healthy eating etc. This is potentially easier for local authority based scheme providers where course manager's work with other areas on a daily basis. All scheme providers can however, benefit from the added value of being integrated with other programmes.

School Travel Planning and Safer Routes to School;
Many school travel plans identify cycling as the preferred mode of travel for a majority of pupils. If schools do not already offer cycle training courses it can be identified in the action plan and funding support can be available for the provision of secure cycle storage and improvements on routes to school.

Healthy Schools;
The National Healthy Schools Programme is a popular and well respected programme among schools promoting healthy lifestyles in line with the Every Child Matters agenda. School travel planning and the encouragement of walking and cycling to school is included in the Physical Activity section of accreditation under 3.7.

Bike It;
A number of local authorities are now employing Bike It Officers to work with clusters of schools specifically to promote cycling. Many schools involved have been able to evidence significant increases in numbers of pupils cycling to school.

School Sport Partnerships;
All schools now form part of a school sports partnership which is a group of schools working together under the leadership of a partnership development manager to develop physical activity and sport opportunities for all young people. They are designed to enhance opportunities for young people to experience different sports, access high quality coaching and training and engage in competition.

Wheels 2 Work
This scheme aims to provide access to opportunities for individuals and groups who are experiencing difficulties in accessing training, employment and/or educational opportunities, because of a lack of suitable public or private transport. Whilst primarily focussing on providing powered 2 wheel transport, a number of organisations are providing bicycles to young people and offering cycle training.
