New National Standard Assistant Instructor Course
We are pleased to announce that the National Standard Assistant Instructor course is now available to view and download from the Cycle Training Standards Board (CTSB) website. The course has been recognised by the Department for Transport, and Instructor Training Providers wishing to offer the Assistant Instructor course can now use the documentation provided to train participants to the defined outcomes.
Those completing the National Standard Assistant Instructor course will be able to assist with the delivery of Levels 1 and 2 of the National Standard under the full supervision of a fully qualified National Standard Instructor. A maximum of two Assistant Instructors can be supervised by one fully qualified instructor.
It is anticipated that the launch of this course will enable those with a general interest and enthusiasm for cycling – including existing volunteers – to provide support to local National Standard schemes in a professional capacity that was not possible before.
To find out more about how the course can be used to help with the delivery of Bikeability schemes, please contact us at contactus@bikeability.org.uk

Balance Bikes
I'm just like most parents and when it came to my first child's 3rd birthday I went to the bike shop and got a bike with stabilisers. She's now 5 and still can't cycle, but when my son was 2 a lucky chance meant that I got a handed on balance bike. Balance bikes have no pedals and are the best first stage for cycling.
Most instructors know that the best way to teach adults that can't cycle is to take the pedals off their bike. Many children's bikes are made in such a way that its difficult to do this. Although they are a transition product kids really love them ... if you type balance bike into a search engine it'll give you loads of places you can get them.
