The Bikeability resource is in three main sections:
- Why cycle?
- Ready to cycle?
- Get cycling!
'Why cycle?' and 'Ready to cycle?' include pictures
to encourage discussion of cycling issues and matters of interest. There
are fun, interactive games to motivate your pupils, supported by lesson plans
and activity sheets to reinforce the learning.
'Get cycling!' provides you with a 'toolkit' of activities, ideas,
information and practical templates which will help you to encourage cycling
amongst pupils in your school. All the lesson plans can be found here for
easy reference and they can also be accessed from the relevant section of
'Why cycle?' and 'Ready to cycle'.
You can also order a free Get Cycling school pack, which
offers a step by step approach to active cycling and includes stickers, a
poster, a teachers' booklet and a cycling wall chart for your use in the
classroom. Email bikeability1@btbmf.co.uk to

Bikeability is the 'cycling
profieciency' for the 21st century - the scheme that gives children the skills
and confidence they need to cycle in modern road conditions. It has been
developed by Cycling England and the Department for Transport.

Sustainable Schools
By 2020 the Government would like all schools to be models of sustainable travel, where vehicles are used only when absolutely necessary and where there are exemplary facilities for healthier, less polluting or less dangerous modes of transport. In following the various activities in this resource you will be encouraging your pupils to think about transport and travel issues and enabling them to develop their skills and knowledge so that they can include cycling as part of their lifestyle.
PSHE
The pupils will be talking and writing about their opinions and explaining their views on a range of issues connected to cycling. They will collect information, make choices and take action.
In learning about the benefits of exercise through cycling and healthy eating they will be developing a healthy, safer lifestyle.
Above all, pupils will be encouraged to take responsibility, participate and to make real choices and real decisions.
English
There are many opportunities for pupils to practise speaking and listening skills, through discussion and more formal debate and when making presentations to different audiences.Pupils will be explaining, reporting, planning and evaluating.
Additionally, they will be responding to the online activities and texts and will develop their responses by planning and writing for a variety of purposes.
Maths
Activities include surveying attitudes to cycling. This enables pupils to handle data. They will be problem solving, communicating, reasoning, processing and interpreting data.ICT
In using this resource pupils are working with others to explore a variety of information sources and ICT tools. They can also use ICT to prepare information, for example the results of their survey.Geography
When your pupils consider route planning they will be using maps and plans in a meaningful context. Carrying out the survey, collecting and recording evidence enables them to practise the skills of geographical enquiry.PE
Pupils will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of fitness and health, particularly in knowing how exercise affects the body in the short term and why physical activity is good for their health and well-being.
In following some of the ideas suggested in the Design corner pupils have the opportunity to generate ideas for cycling products. They can develop and explain their ideas communicating them in different ways.
By making first hand drawings they will be recording from experience and can then explore these ideas for different purposes.
