The Personal Achievement Award recognises individuals who have overcome challenges or achieved something significant through cycling — showing resilience, determination and the power of Bikeability to change lives.

Mohammed Dawud Ali is a powerful example of exactly that.

Nine years ago, Mohammed couldn’t ride a bike. Living in North Manchester, he also noticed there were very few accessible opportunities for people in his community to learn to cycle or maintain their bikes.

Determined to change that — starting with himself — Mohammed learned to ride from scratch.

From there, his journey quickly grew. After gaining confidence on the bike, he trained as a cycle mechanic, supporting local ‘Dr Bike’ repair sessions. He also helped establish essential cycling infrastructure in his area, including a tool station, bike hoops and a cycle shelter, making cycling more accessible for others.

“Cycling means leisure, being with friends and the freedom to be in the great outdoors — and helping the environment.”

Mohammed went on to qualify as a cycle ride leader with Cycling UK, before founding the North Manchester Community Cycling Club. His goal was simple: to create inclusive opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to access cycling.

Through partnerships with Cycling UK and Transport for Greater Manchester, Mohammed has helped deliver initiatives such as e-bike projects and a free bike library, removing cost barriers and opening up cycling to more people.

Today, he runs regular sessions for local communities — many from deprived backgrounds — teaching people how to ride, build confidence on the road, and carry out essential bike safety checks.

“My favourite cycling moment is when children are able to ride after many weeks of dedication.”

Mohammed’s work has supported hundreds of people to take up cycling, improving health, confidence and independence across his community. His passion has also inspired others to get involved, with more volunteers now supporting his sessions.

Since winning his Celebration of Bikeability award, Mohammed has continued to grow his impact — mentoring new instructors and expanding opportunities for the next generation of riders.
