Investing in the Future of Bikeability

I’m pleased to share that Ministers have agreed three years of Bikeability Grant funding for the period 2026–2029, ahead of the Department for Transport’s final business planning, which is due to conclude in the spring. This decision reconfirms the Government’s commitment to Bikeability as a core part of its vision for active travel and its wider programme of change.

While individual allocations are still being finalised, this confirmation provides important long-term certainty and enables us to plan confidently for the years ahead. Further details will be shared as soon as they are available.

More details regarding this can be found here.

A Year of Momentum, Impact and National Recognition

2025 has been an exceptional year for The Bikeability Trust, bringing together national recognition, meaningful policy influence, growing reach, and a strong sense of momentum as we look ahead.

Celebrating Success on a National Stage

Last year saw Bikeability’s work recognised at the highest level. At the 2025 Modeshift National Travel Awards, the Trust received three national awards, including Innovative Active Travel Project of the Year for the Bikeability Club, alongside accolades celebrating immersive training and leadership in sustainable travel. These awards reflect the dedication, creativity and quality embedded across our programmes.

2025 also marked the Trust’s 18th anniversary, a milestone that provided an opportunity to reflect on nearly two decades of delivery and the remarkable achievement of training almost six million children nationwide.

Shaping the Conversation on Active Travel

Throughout the year, the Trust played an active role in shaping the future of cycling and walking policy. This included a considered response to the government’s Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy (CWIS3) consultation, reinforcing the importance of inclusive, confidence-building cycle training and robust measures of success.

We also welcomed developments in national curriculum review discussions, highlighting the strong alignment between Bikeability and the growing emphasis on life skills, sustainability and outdoor learning.

Last year, we also partnered with Living Streets to launch Safer Streets for All, strengthening the Trust’s role in the national road safety conversation. The report makes a clear case for safer speeds, inclusive street design and high-quality cycle training as essential to protecting the most vulnerable road users.

Reaching More Children Than Ever

Bikeability’s scale and impact continued to grow in 2025. Data from the Bikeability: Cycling for the Nation report shows that during 2024–25, more than 500,000 training places were booked, with children collectively spending close to three million hours cycling. By the end of 2025, over six million children had taken part in Bikeability training

Alongside delivery, the Trust strengthened its evidence base by commissioning further research into the long-term impact of Level 2 Bikeability training.

Engaging Communities and Inspiring Participation

National moments such as Cycle to School Week once again demonstrated Bikeability’s ability to mobilise schools, families and communities, with participation and pledges exceeding previous years.

Across the summer and autumn, the Trust worked closely with partners to support delivery planning, promote funding opportunities and encourage sustained engagement, ensuring Bikeability remained visible, accessible and impactful at a local level.

We also launched Hey Cycle!, a playful but powerful data-driven campaign for Cycle to School Week that explored the gap between cycling representation on children’s screens and real-life cycling participation.

We’ve seen great momentum behind Bike Bus too, empowering communities to set up group cycling routes to school with support and resources from the Trust, further embedding active travel into daily life for children and families across the country.

Strengthening the Organisation for the Future

Behind the scenes, 2025 was also a year of organisational development. Insights from instructor feedback, conferences and sector engagement informed ongoing improvements to quality assurance, workforce support and professional development.

The Trust continued to embed its new strategic direction, setting clear foundations for future growth and ensuring Bikeability remains resilient, responsive and ambitious as it moves forward.
