We’re heading into May with real momentum, both in Parliament and across our programme. From Westminster Hall to the classroom, Bikeability continues to be a leading voice in road safety, active travel and life skills education.
The Celebration of Bikeability Awards
The Celebration of Bikeability Awards 2025 are now open. We’re calling on the entire cycle training community to help us celebrate the people and organisations making a difference every day. Whether it’s an instructor who inspires confidence, a team going the extra mile or a remarkable personal journey, now’s the time to shine a light on their work.
With prizes worth over £3,000, including vouchers, experiences and cycling gear, there’s even more reason to recognise our champions. Nominations are open now, so let’s celebrate the people powering Bikeability forward.
Road Safety
April marked a major milestone for Bikeability, our first-ever Westminster Hall Debate. These debates give MPs a platform to raise national issues and get a formal response from a Government Minister, and we used ours to make a powerful case for why Bikeability must remain central to the UK’s road safety strategy.
A huge thank you to MP Olly Glover, one of our parliamentary champions, who secured the debate and led a passionate call for long-term support and even curriculum inclusion. Olly sits on both the Transport Select Committee and APPGCW, and has already asked a question on our behalf in Transport Orals. Fusion, working with our Strategy team, briefed over 20 MPs with local Bikeability data, impact insights and real stories. That hard work paid off. Over 24 MPs attended, far above the typical 4–6.
DfT Minister for the Future of Roads, Lillian Greenwood MP, expressed clear support for Bikeability and acknowledged our role in a long-term active travel strategy. MPs debated Road Safety and Active Travel to School, and a clear message emerged: Bikeability cycle training transforms lives, building confidence, increasing safety and giving children real travel choices.
Thank you to everyone who supported the day, whether through logistics, data or simply cheering us on. You can watch clips from the debate on our X profile, and don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Instagram too.
We’re also pleased to announce our joint Road Safety Report with Living Streets will be launched at the APPGCW meeting on May 19. This collaboration showcases how we’re working together to ensure safe streets and active travel are part of everyday life, and what we are calling for in the forthcoming Government Road Safety Strategy. As the largest provider of road safety education in the country, our voice is critical and thank you to those of who submitted evidence to our call for evidence.
Finally, we are working with the APPGCW on a rapid call for evidence on ebike safety and gig economy. The call for evidence is open until the 15th May, please do submit your thoughts, more information: https://appgcw.org/resources/inquiries/e-bike-safety-inquiry-call-for-evidence/
Digi
We’re reintroducing a drip-feed approach to encourage delivery partners to onboard to the digital system. We have extended the project, originally due for completion in March 2024, based on your feedback and making changes to ensure it worked for Industry. However, we cannot now extend further and you must be onboarded to digitisation by the end of summer, to maintain your registration. A message will be going out shortly to reinforce this. The sooner you’re on board, the smoother the transition.
Spending review
While we expect departmental spending envelopes to be confirmed in June, this does not mean our specific funding will be immediately confirmed or communicated. We know this creates uncertainty, but please be reassured, Bikeability remains a priority and we continue to make the case strongly for long-term, secure investment in cycle training.
Welcome to new staff
We’re delighted to welcome Laura Fleming as our new Director of Strategy, and Harriet Reuter Hapgood as our new Media Officer. They bring a wealth of experience and energy to our work, and we’re excited for the impact they’ll have. We have had a few changes over the past few weeks, so please visit the website to know who to contact. You can learn all about the Trust’s teams here.
A reminder: we love getting out to visit you. Whether that’s attending team meetings, visiting schools or simply saying thank you to instructors in person. If you’d like to invite a member of the Trust team to your next event or delivery session, please do get in touch.
As always, thank you for the extraordinary work you do every day to make cycling safer, easier, and more accessible for children across the country.
