The Family of the Year Award celebrates families who make cycling part of everyday life — supporting each other, building confidence, and inspiring others to get cycling.

The Ward family embody exactly that.

Based in Milton Keynes, Jonathan and Helen Ward, along with their sons Joseph and Finley, are at the heart of their local school cycling community. Every Friday morning, they take part in the Two Mile Ash School Bike Bus — a growing initiative that now sees over 30 children riding to school together.

Come rain or shine, the Ward family are always among the first to arrive.

Their commitment goes beyond simply taking part. As regular volunteers on the bike bus, Jonathan and Helen help support and encourage other families, creating a positive and welcoming environment for children building confidence on their bikes.

At home, cycling is just as embedded. As a family, they regularly explore Milton Keynes’ extensive cycle network together, and their eldest son has already completed Bikeability Levels 1 and 2 — developing the skills and independence that come with it.

“We’ve loved being part of Two Mile Ash School’s fantastic weekly bike bus, and building confidence on two wheels as a family.”

Through their enthusiasm, consistency and community spirit, the Ward family have helped make cycling more visible, accessible and enjoyable for others around them.

“We’re proud to be a small part of something that encourages safer, more enjoyable cycling.”

Their story shows how cycling as a family can go far beyond the ride itself — building confidence, connection and community along the way.
